Munich Surrounds

Kloster AndechsKloster Andechs
beer garden with its famous Klosterbier ("Cloister Beer") and the nearby church on the "Heilige Berg" (holy mountain). Already in its antiquity, the Heilige Berg was established as a holy site in the 10th Century. In 1455 Benedictine monks founded the cloister Andechs. For more than 500 years the cloister-brewery has beer pouring its characteristic Starkbier ("strong beer") for the public. www.andechs.de

Wieskirche
Built between 1746 and 1754, this imposing church is one of the purest examples of its kind emerging from the Rococo period. It was designed by Dominikus Zimmermann (UNESCO heritage listed!). The "Broadway Production" of the life of King Ludwig II is currently being staged in a nearby complex built specially for the show. The costly venue stands before an imposing background, which includes a view of the castle itself; www.wieskirche.de

Starnberger SeeStarnberger See
Munich's nearest lake and popular recreational destination for Munich locals, with numerous swimming beaches, sporting options and boat trips. The year 1886 is historically relevant here, as that was when King Ludwig II and his physician Dr. Gudden met their untimely, and as yet unexplained, deaths in the lake. A wooden cross on the eastern bank of the lake near Schloss Berg, marks the spot; www.seenschifffahrt.de

Tegernsee - Schliersee
these lakes are about 60km south of Munich near the Austrian border. Starting point for beautiful mountain walks, and also for swimming - best on warm summer days;
